Jon was adding coal briquette into the coal stove, to keep him warm during the winter. Jon loves sitting outside of his bookshop smoking and watching people passing by. Compared to the summer time, winter is a slack season for the bookstore. When there are not many customers around, Jon would sit outside for a long time smoking or drinking a cup of coffee from the Waitrose nearby.
